Phone-free weekend
Ten people, two nights, shared meals, time in nature and space for creativity.

The first Boring Weekend brings ten people together for two nights in a characterful eighteenth-century house in Wallonia. We’ll put our phones away, share meals, spend time in nature and make room for real conversation, new ideas and rest.
With phones switched off and stored away, we can give each other our full attention. It also gives our thoughts, curiosity and creativity more room to move in directions that constant digital input often crowds out.

Shared dinners on Friday and Saturday and short morning check-ins give the weekend a simple rhythm. Around those moments, the schedule stays open.
Plans can take shape naturally, whether that means heading outside, starting a game, getting absorbed in a creative idea or following the energy of the group.
Nothing is tightly programmed, but the weekend is not designed as ten separate solo retreats either. The aim is to create enough structure for connection, with enough freedom for the experience to remain spontaneous.
On Friday evening, phones are switched off and stored away until Sunday afternoon. They won’t stay in pockets, bags or bedrooms.
Physical distance is key. It removes the reflex to check, scroll or fill every quiet moment with a screen.
Before the weekend begins, we will agree on a clear arrangement for genuine emergencies. Your phone remains accessible if truly needed, but otherwise stays completely switched off and out of reach.
The surroundings are part of the experience. Boring Weekends are held in homes chosen for their atmosphere, comfort and proximity to nature.
For this first edition, we’ll stay in an eighteenth-century house on the edge of historic Huy. It has a large living room and a separate dining room, both with painted scenes on the walls, as well as a kitchen and bedrooms spread across two floors.
We will have the entire house to ourselves for the weekend.
If the weather is good, we can also eat together in the garden, either beside the house or beneath the large trees.

The area around the house offers a mix of woodland, historic places and quieter cultural sites, with several possibilities close by.
Yeunten Ling, a Tibetan Buddhist centre set within a wooded castle estate, is within walking distance of the house. On Sunday afternoon, visitors can join a guided tour of its temple, stupa and grounds.
A little further away, Château de Modave sits high above the Hoyoux valley, surrounded by woods and a nature reserve. Visitors can explore its historic rooms and gardens, or follow one of the walking routes nearby.
Our weekend also coincides with Wallonia’s Heritage Days, when historic buildings and cultural sites across the region open their doors for free. Some require advance booking.
For something simpler, the woods can be reached from the grounds via a gate near the orchard, making it easy to step outside for a walk without turning it into a planned outing.
These are possibilities rather than a shared itinerary. People can join an outing, explore independently or remain at the house.
The weekend has space for ten people, including the organiser. Nine participant places are available across three sleeping options.
Sleeping places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. A room or bed is secured once payment has been received. Submitting a request does not place it on hold.
Room prices cover accommodation only. A required shared weekend contribution of approximately €65–€85 per person covers food, drinks and shared weekend supplies.

Room photos are representative. Your exact room will be confirmed when sleeping places are allocated.
Shared rooms will be matched as thoughtfully as possible. We aim to place guests with someone of the same gender, and mixed-gender rooms will only be arranged with everyone’s explicit agreement.
Once your place is confirmed, you will receive a short private questionnaire about sleeping habits and preferences. This will help us make considerate room pairings.
Room prices cover accommodation only. Each participant will also pay a required shared weekend contribution, currently estimated at €65–€85.
This is expected to cover Friday’s shared dinner, groceries for the dinner we will prepare together on Saturday, breakfasts, simple lunches, snacks, coffee and tea, wine, Belgian beer, non-alcoholic drinks and shared weekend supplies.
The final amount will depend on the final menu choices and the actual cost of provisions. It will be confirmed by Friday 28 August 2026 and must be paid by Friday 4 September 2026.
Transport and any entrance fees for optional outings are not included.
Bed linen and towels are included and provided for all participants.
Travel to and from the house is at your own expense. The house is easiest to reach by car. From the western Netherlands, the journey takes around three hours.
Before the weekend, participants can opt into a shared carpool list so drivers and passengers can coordinate directly. Contact details will only be shared with permission.
People of all nationalities are welcome. English will be the shared language for the weekend.
Accommodation payment deadline
Tuesday 11 August 2026 at 23:59
Once your request has been accepted, you will receive payment instructions. Your place and preferred sleeping arrangement are confirmed only after the accommodation payment has been received.
The accommodation payment covers your room only. The separate shared weekend contribution of approximately €65–€85 will be confirmed by Friday 28 August 2026 and is due by Friday 4 September 2026.
You may cancel and receive a full refund until Tuesday 11 August 2026 at 23:59. After that time, your payment is non-refundable unless another participant takes your place.
The weekend depends on enough participant places being filled. You will receive final confirmation on Wednesday 12 August 2026. If the weekend cannot go ahead, all accommodation payments will be refunded in full.
Boring Weekends only works if everyone genuinely commits to the phone-free format. You do not have to find switching off easy, but you do need to be willing to take part fully and have your phone stored away from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon.
You can be outgoing or quiet, creatively inclined or simply curious. What matters is respecting the shared format, the house and the space of the other participants.
We expect most participants to be between 30 and 55, but the age range is flexible. Being open to shared time, meeting new people and spending a weekend without your phone matters more than your exact age.
If the idea brings relief, curiosity or even a little nervousness, you may be in the right place.

Hi, I’m Barbara, the founder and host of Boring Weekends.
I’m based in The Hague and have spent much of my life living, studying and working abroad, including in Malaysia, China and the UK. Those experiences made me curious about people from different backgrounds and about what helps us genuinely connect.
I started Boring Weekends because I enjoy bringing different people together and creating the conditions for conversations and ideas that might not happen in everyday life.
I’ll take care of the practical preparations and provide some gentle structure, while joining the weekend as part of the group. I’m not there as a coach or retreat leader, but as the person bringing everyone together and helping the weekend run smoothly.
Choose your preferred sleeping place and submit your request by Tuesday 11 August 2026 at 23:59.
Submitting the form does not confirm your place. If your request is accepted, you will receive payment instructions. Your place and preferred sleeping arrangement are secured once the accommodation payment has been received.
